From fascinating archival images of tribal
leaders, fishermen and American workers, to
riveting m odem pictures of refugees, city
dwellers and urban laborers, “In Focus” takes
visitors around the globe and through the
heights and depths of human emotion.
The exhibition highlights the work of some
of National G eographic’s most celebrated
photographers. National Geographic photog
raphers have taken more pictures of people
than o f any other subject, indicating “a
p h o to g ra p h e r’s d esire to co n n ect w ith
people— to capture something consequential
about another person,” wrote National Geo
graphic m agazine associate editor Chris
Johns.
“To capture the spirit and essence of other
human beings is a challenge beyond measure,
but when it happens and the photograph
comes together, the creation brings joy."
Portraits are, literally and figuratively, reflections
of ourselves, and the memorable ones have a
simple, yet profound universal appeal.
Powerful portraits can reflect the continuity of
human experience over time or emphasize the
physical and cultural differences that distinguish
human beings from one another.
“In Focus: Nationäl Geographic Greatest Por
traits,” an exhibition consisting of 56 striking color
and black-and-white photographs, is currently on
display at the World Forestry Center Discovery
Museum at Portland Washington Park through
June 21.
The exhibition, created by the Smithsonian’s
National Museum of Natural History and National
Geographic, has never before been shown in the
Pacific Northwest.

Historic Irvington Homes
Historic homes are about more than great exterior details
like dentils and rafter tails, leaded glass and Ionic columns;
they’re also about how their owners fit comfortably into the
timeless styles and atmosphere that these homes embody.
The Irvington Home Tour has captured the intimate as
pect of these historic homes for over 40 years and now a
photo exhibit and sale touches on these classics in “His
toric Irvington Homes” at the Architectural Heritage Center,
701 S.E. Grand Ave. Admission is $5 for the general public
and free to center members.
Photos from the past seven years of tours have docu
mented the great interiors showcased in the annual tours.
Many of these photos and some historic images from the
early days of Irvington are on display and for sale during
the May exhibit. The Architectural Heritage Center is open
from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. For
membership and program information, go to VisitAHC.org
or call 503-231-7264.
