HOUSING AUTHORITY OF PORTLAND A p ril I. 2009 Sportsmanship over Conflict continued ¿ ^ f r o m Front U nsportsm anship in the stands reared its ugly head two weeks ago when a fight broke out in the Jefferson High School section at the Oregon 5A Boys basketball cham pionship game in Eu gene. McCormick doesn’t know the people who were involved in the incident, but said con flict resolution techniques can benefit everyone. He also wants to see the pilot program eventually extended to par ents, coaches and referees. “Parents and fans are influ enced by how the players, coaches and referees conduct themselves,” he said. “It will take tim e, but we w ant to change the whole culture of the game.” Roy Pittman, a renowned African American wrestling coach who works out of the Peninsula Park Community Center, is one of the conflict resolution instructors. H is tra in in g se ssio n s, which include both the ath letes and their parents, begin with losing, which he says teaches m ore lessons than winning. The pilot program is long overdue, he says. “You need to start working on the kids w hen th e y ’re young. Then you get to the parents, who are frequently worse than the kids. Their es teem is attached to the kids, so they can ’t be objective. They bring tension and emo tion,” he said. Dr. Johnny Lake, another coach on the conflict resolu tion team says that in addition to avoiding conflicts, this sort of training represents “a won derful opportunity for kids to ge, additional learning oppor tunities. “Sports provide an opportu nity for many things in our soci ety, including life lessons and a chance to reach across bound aries,” Lake said. "This is a rich and diverse city, but opportuni ties for kids to engage people of different backgrounds are often limited to sports.” Nike Greene, who is study ing c o u n se lin g and fam ily therapy at George Fox Univer sity, says that when she was in middle school, "Female athletes didn’t have a lot of support. T here w ere m ostly m ale coaches. Personal boundaries and body issues were not even discussed.” In her training sessions, she asks, “Am 1 limited because I’m female? Because of the length of my hair ? Because of the color of my skin?” In a chorus the girls answered, “No!” A ndre A shley, the Parks d e p a rtm e n t's su p erv iso r o f youth sports leagues, asked the players, “When your teammate misses two free throws and you lose by a point, who lost that game?” The answer, also in a chorus, was, “The team!” Later, at a debriefing, the resolution coaches confessed that they also were also learn ing, particularly about ways to reach th e ir young a u d i ence. They said they had to vary their approach, and try not to exceed the kids’ atten tion span. They also noted th a t th e sa m e te c h n iq u e s didn’t work equally well with the girls and the boys. “You have to be receptive to new ways to reach 21 st century youth,” Pittman said. “They’re used to m ulti-tasking, so it’s harder to get their full atten tion.” During one training session both girls and boys were suffi ciently rambunctious that the trainers gave them a lecture on respect for teachers.
