2009 Kia
Borrego EX 4X4
The 2009 Kia Borrego is a true
body-on-fram e 4x4 SUV that
feels comfortable both on the road
and off of it.Kia is hoping to lure
customers to its soven-passenger,
body-on-fram e SUV with the
promise of luxury at a value price.
The Borrego is Kia's first model
to offer accessories such as voice-
activated navigation, Bluetooth,
keyless start and a back-up cam
era. Other options such as leather
seating, an upgraded Infinity au
dio system and a rear-seat DVD
entertainment system may come
as a surprise to consummers who
may have previously considered
Kia strictly a bare-bones brand.
The 2009 Kia Borrego is up
against long-running, top-selling
midsize standbys such as the Ford
Explorer, Toyota 4Runner and
Nissan Pathfinder. The Borrego
has a slightly lower base price than
these competitors, and offers all
the necessities for an active fam
ily, such as a 60/40-folding second
Specifications: 3.8L 24 valve DOHC V6 engine; 5-speed automatic transmission; City 16
mpg, 21 Highway mpg; MRSP $36,295.
row and a 50/50-split third row.
The Borrego is available with
rear-wheel or four-wheel drive
systems, in either LX, EX, or Lim
ited trims. Two drive-train choices
are available, the first, a 276-hp

3.8-liter V6 mated to five-speed
automatic, or a 337-hp 4.6-liter V8
mated to an all new six-speed au
'
tomatic transmission. Towing ca
pacity with the 3.8-liter V6 is rated
for 5,000 pounds, while the 4.6-
liter V8 is capable of towing 7,500
pounds. Standard features include
seven-passenger seating, inte
grated rear tow hitch, cruise con
trol, and roof rails. Standard safety
features include full length side
curtain airbags, seat m ounted
airbags, drivers knee airbag (V8
only), active front head restraints,
electronic stability program, and
back-up warning system. Unlike
some trucks, the Borrego has coil
springs, front and rear, which
should provide a more car-like
ride.
The Borrego gives Kia its most-
powerful and best-equipped ve
hicle yet, and it shows consumers
that the brand once known mostly
for value and economy can field a
credible entry in a near-premium
vehicle segment. The Kia Borrego
EX is an SUV that is capable,
comfortable and loaded with great
options; however, it is price is
within the same arena as it com
petitors so it will not stand out as
much in a market that is losing it
popularity.
