(AP) - Roland Burris took his
place as Barack Obama's succes­
sor in the Senate on Thursday,
ending a standoff that embar­
rassed the president-elect and
fellow Democrats who initially
resisted the appointment by scan­
dal-scarred Illinois Gov. Rod
Blagojevich.
"I do," Burris said with a grin
as Vice President Dick Cheney
administered the oath of office to
the former Illinois attorney gen­
eral who takes Obama's place as
the Senate's only black member.
More than a week after his

colleagues were sworn in, Burris
was seated Thursday without
objection or a roll call vote, even
though Majority Leader Harry
Reid had said senators would have
their voices heard on whether to
accept his appointment.
Illinois delegation members
and members of the Congres­
sional BlackCaucusjoined Demo­
cratic and Republican senators in
giving Burris a congratulatory
standing ovation, handshakes
and hugs on the Senate floor.
Senate Democrats wanted to
move beyond the distracting con­
troversy and its racial undertones.
Both Reid and Illinois' senior
senator, Dick Durbin, smiled
broadly and praised Burris in
speeches, insisting anew that
their previous resistance wasn't
about Burris personal ly but rather
about how he was appointed.
Later in a stately parlor off the
Senate floor, Burris told his fam­
ily, friends and a few colleagues
that being seated in the Senate
was "a dream come true," and
pledged to uphold the Constitu­

he didn't speak English well, and
that's when the man got out of his
truck, yelled some religious slurs
at the man, then punched him
twice. When the victim's friend
tried to intervene, the assailant
punched that man, too.
The attacker threatened to kill
both men before getting back into
his truck and driving off.

The Portland Police Bureau, in
cooperation with Crime Stop­
pers, is asking fo r your help in
identifying a serial robber caught
on videotape robbing a local
Plaid Pantry store.
Then on Wednesday, Nov. 5,
at approximately 7:33 p.m., the
same suspect went back to the
Plaid Pantry on North Greeley,
and with physical force, robbed
the same employee. The suspect
approached the clerk and immedi­
ately grabbed her by her sweater
and demanded money from the
cash register.
The suspect is a black male in
his mid-thirties, 5 feet, 7 inches to
6 feet tall, 175 pounds and bald. In
the first two robberies, he was
wearing a dark blue hooded
sweatshirt with the words “Polo
Jeans” on the front.

The Cal ifomia S upreme Court recognized
marriage as a fundamental right. To take
away that right a constitutional revision re­
quiring a two-thirds vote by the state legis­
lature - and not just a simple majority vote -
would be needed in order to bar same-sex
marriage. If Prop 8 is allowed to stand the
fundamental rights of all minority groups will
be placed in jeopardy.
“Proposition 8 effects more than just the
LGBT community. This decision will ulti­
mately affect how the rights of all minority
groups are treated in the state of California,”

from afar, Burris dug in and the
two Senate Democratic leaders
ultimately relented under pres­
sure from Obama and rank-and-
file Democrats who worried that
the episode was distracting from
more important matters and put­
ting the party — and the presi­
dent-elect — in a bad light.
