Oregon
Wine
Author brings
people into picture
W ith a title like Oregon: The Taste o f W ine, you
would think that Janis M iglavs' new book would be
about O regon wine. Oh no, another w ine book.
W rong. The book is about people and a cosm ic
mystery.
The people are the folks o f O regon wine. More
than 100 are featured in the book.
T here’s the vineyard laborer, who cam e as an
illegal immigrant to work his way up to become the
vineyard manager of one o f Oregon's largest vine
yards, and an American citizen.
And the winemaker who has a
spiritual experience when he
drives his tractor through the
vineyard. And the embarrassed
winemaker who late one night
received a call from the owner,
who lived next to the winery,
wondering why red wine was
coming from the children’s bath
tub faucet. The new ly-hired
winemaker forgot to shut a valve.
In all, Janis recorded m ore than 200 hours
o f interviews with more than 100 owners,
winem akers and vineyard managers from all
over the state and spoke with many more
w orkers-in several languages.
Besides the unique copy, it's a hard-bound
photographic book worthy o f being called a
table top work. True to his National G eo
graphic background, Janis captured more
than 3m 000 photographs, which he and a
band o f editors culled dow n to the approxi
mately 150 that made it into the book.

privileges and blessings we take for granted.
Festival organizer J.W . Doncan invites the
com m unity to screen the m ovie and jo in in a
discussion following the film, scheduled M on
day, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. in the JHS C om m u n ity

Life + Debt pow erfully displays a prime
exam ple o f the impact econom ic globalization
can have on a developing country.
The voice-over narration, written and deliv
ered by Jam aica Kincaid, is adapted from her
book, "A Small Place, Life and Debt,” from the
point o f view o f Jam aican workers, farmers,
governm ent and policy officials.
Stephanie Black, the filmmaker, dissects the
"mechanism of debt" that is destroying local agriculture
and industry while substituting sw eatshops and cheap
imports.
Life + Debt exposes the roles o f the International
M onetary Fund, the W orld Bank, the W orld Trade O rga
nization and globalization in creating adverse conditions.
