Portland Opera Presents a Classic
Portland Opera presents Beethoven’s
first and only opera, Fidelio, a classic res
cue story with breathtaking last-minute
liberation. Performances open Friday, Nov.
7 at Keller Auditorium with additional per
formances on Sunday, Nov. 9 and Thurs
day, Nov. 13 and Friday, Nov. 15.
Fidelio is considered a work o f great
beauty and signification, composed when
Beethoven was facing the agonies of los
ing his hearing and when he longed to free
himself from the cage of deafness.
The work identifies strongly with the
ideas of faith, determination and the re
ward of patience during a period of per
sonal crisis. Fidelio’s score is a tribute to
freedom, fidelity and the indomitable hu
man spirit.

dilemmas o f childhood in 'Magic
Theater,' a play geared for kindergar
ten through third graders, yet enjoyed
by all. Performances take place at
10:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednes
days and Fridays through Nov. 21. A 2
p.m. matinee is scheduled Saturday,
