As the manager of premier meeting, convention, exhibition and
performing arts public venues in Oregon, MERC purchases many types
of materials and services - from cleaning and building supplies to
construction and professional services.
Executive Directs Consumer Banking
Quentin Strode has been nam ed regional
manager for U S Bank Consum er Banking in
the Portland-Vancouver m etropolitan area.
He succeeds Tina Foster, who recently re­
tired.
Strode previously was se­
nior vice president and re­
gional consum er executive for
Bank of America in the north
Texas and M idwest region
where he oversaw the activi­
ties of banking centers stretch­
ing across the greater Dallas,
Arkansas, Oklahom a, Kansas
City and St. Louis areas. He
previously was em ployed in
managerial positions with First
Interstate Bank and as an in­
dependent consultant.

Among the experiences Strode brings to
the table include his ability to
differentiate and distinguish a
bank’s brand and use that dis­
tinction to increase market
share.
Strode earned a bachelor’s
d e g re e from Ja c k so n v ille
State University in Alabama.
He also studied in the M aster
o f Public and Private M an­
agem ent program at Birming­
ham Southern College in Bir­
m ingham , Ala. He graduated
from the G raduate School of
Banking at the Pacific Coast
School Banking School at the
University o f W ashington in
Seattle in 2001.
He was a m em ber o f the corporate advi­
sory board o f the G reater Los Angeles
African Am erican C ham ber o f Com m erce.
The purchase of day-to-day materials, equipment and services are
managed independently by each venue according to MERC’s purchasing
and solicitation guidelines. When the agency seeks professional or
consulting services that will benefit all its venues, the solicitation is
managed by MERC’s contracting and purchasing division. Additionally,
construction and building project services are managed through
solicitation by MERC Capital Construction Division.

‘Rookie of the
Year’ one of
his goals
(A P) — He was drafted
more than 14 months ago, and
even then he looked too old to
be a first-year player, so it's
easy to forget that Greg Oden
is technically a rookie.
Sidelined all season after
knee surgery, the top pick in
the 2007 draft never got to
com pete with No. 2 selection
Kevin Durant for the Rookie
o f the Y ear award. So he's
eligible to win it this year, and
that's one o f his goals.
"I hope so," O den said
Thursday. "I'm working for
it"
The Portland center defi­
nitely feels like a newcom er
this week, joining a num ber of
f ir s t- y e a r p la y e rs in the
league's rookie transition pro­
gram, a four-day event where
players are counseled on is-
sues they will face on and off
the court.
Players are g iven three
years to com plete the pro­
gram, in case they are unavail­
able in the summer before they
enter the NBA. Oden couldn't
com e last year because it
started just days after he had
microfracture surgery on his
right knee.
He finally began taking part
in 5-on-5 driIIs last week, play­
ing twice with his Trail Blaz­
ers team m ates, and seemed
pleased with his progress.
"When I first came back to
Portland. I came back about
three weeks ago, and I was a
little bit nervous getting in there
and starting working out with
the guys," Oden said. "I was
nervous about how I was go­
ing to play, but the more 1 got
toplaying, it's just about going
out there and playing the game
I love, so it's not really any­
thing to be nervous about."
For now, he doesn't think
the Blazers will let him do too
much more.
”1 don't think they're going
to do that until the season
starts," he said. "They're try­
ing to make sure nothing hap­
pens, so keeping me on a tight
rope right now."
O den has already ex p eri­
enced plenty in the NBA,
traveling w ith the B lazers on
three long road trips last sea­
son. He said he's learned
m uch m ore in the transition
program , such as the ser­
vices provided by the p lay ­
ers' association and som e fi­
nancial lessons.
Oden, growing out his beard
and looking far older than his
20 years, is already aware
there are no guarantees. Still,
he won't have to worry about
playing time once he's fully
recovered.
"It took a couple of days,
but it felt good," he said of
facing live competition again.
"The second day it felt a lot
better, but I'm still not quite
back yet."
