beyond music. His tradem arked
bald head, full beard and m uscu­
lar frame, often adorned with a
m ultitude o f gold chains, made
him a fashion trendsetter at a time
when most o f his contem poraries
were sporting blowout Afros. He
was also a symbol of black pride,
and an activist for civil rights.
T he Rev. A1 S harpton called
H ayes a "creativ e genius" and
Isaac Hayes was an active performer for decades. He was a
headliner in Portland for the July 4th weekend Waterfront
Blues Festival.

Hayes also acted in m ovies
including "Tough G uys," "I’m
G o n n a G et Y ou S ucka" and
"Hustle & Flow." He had recently
com pleted the movie "Soul Men,"
in which he played him self; the
film also starred Samuel Jackson
and Bernie Mac, w ho died on
Saturday after a bout with pneu­
monia. And a new generation o f
fans discovered the man behind
"S h aft" when, in 1997, he becam e
the voice o f C hef on the Com edy
Central show "South Park."
Hayes, a m em ber o f the Rock
and Roll H allo fF am e, w asaself-
taught m usician from Covington,
Tenn. He began w riting songs,
establishing a songw riting part­
nership with David Porter, and in
the 1960s they w rote classic hits
for Sam and Dave such as "Hold
On, I'm Com ing," "Soul Man,"
and "W hen Som ething is W rong
W ith My Baby." They also wrote
for other Stax artists including
Carla Thomas.
Hayes' work as a com poser
helped him secure a deal as a solo
artist. His first album , "Present­
ing Isaac Hayes," w as a poor
seller, the result o f an im promptu
jam session. But after getting cre­
ative control, he delivered his next
album, "Hot Buttered Soul" in
1969, and it made him a star.
Hayes offered som ething com ­
pletely different to the musical
world. In an era o f straightened
hair or Afros, Hayes was bald:
"His look was ju st so profound,"
Stanback said. "He was like a
superhero."
W hereas other soul crooners
show ed their passion through
wails, Hayes delivery was calm ,
cool — alm ost subdued. He pref­
aced songs with "raps," and they
ran longer than typical standard
o f three minutes: O ne song, a
cover o f G len C am pbell's "By the
Tim e I G et to Phoenix,” ran 18
minutes.

com edy caught him flack when
he was heckled during a sur­
p rise a p p e a ra n c e at a Ju ly
fundraiserfor Democratic presi­
dential candidate and fellow
Chicagoan Barack Obama.
Toward the end of a 10-minute
stan d u p ro u tin e, M ac jo k e d
about m enopause, sexual infi­
delity and promiscuity, and used
o c c a sio n a l c ru d e lan g u ag e.
O bam a took the stage about 15
m inutes later, im plored Mac to
“clean up your act next tim e,"
then let him o ff the hook, add­
ing: "B y the way, I'm ju st m ess­
ing with you, m an."
Even so, O bam a’s cam paign
lajer issued a rebuke, saying the
senator "d o esn 't condone these
statem ents and believes w hat was
said was inappropriate.”
But d esp ite con tro v ersy or
difficulties, in his words, Mac was
alw ays a perform er.
"W herever I am, I have to play,”
he said in 2002. "I have to put on
a good show .”
M ac w orked his way to H olly­
wood success from an im pover­
ished upbringing on C hicago’s
South Side. He began d oing
standup as a child, telling jokes
for spare change on subw ays,
and his film career started with a
small role as aclubdoorm an in the
D amon W ayans com edy “ M o’
M oney” in 1992. In 1996, he ap ­
peared in the Spike Lee dram a
“G et on the Bus.”
He w as one o f "The Original
Kings o f C om edy" in the 2000
docum entary o f that title that
brought a new generation o f black
standup com edy stars to a w ider
audience.
"It’s truly the passing o f one
o f our favorite sons,” said Paula
Robinson, president o f the Black
M etro p o lis N ational H eritage
Area. “ He w asextrem ely innova­
tive in putting his life experiences
in com edic form and doing it with­
out vulgarity.
"H e w as an am bassador of
C h icag o 's black com m unity, and
the national black com m unity at
large.”
