Bam ada, bring their rich harm onies, unique guitar picking and lively drum m ing to Portland W ednesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. as part o f the zoo's Sum m er Concert Series presented by Fred M eyer and W ells Fargo. "H abib K oite and his band, Bam ada, have a rich and extensive repertoire, and they draw on the m any m usical traditions o f Mali," said Krista Swan, zoo events co o r dinator. "Not only does this ap proach grant a w ide breadth o f m aterial, it also sym bolizes Koite's openness to a variety o f music." Koite is revered as a griot, an im portant class o f W est A frican m usician-bards. But unlike many other griots, Koite em phasizes soft, cadenced m elodies, using a form he c r e a te d c a jle d d a n s s a - d o s o . "D anssa" is a rhythm popular to his native city o f Keyes, and "doso" is one o f the most potent and ancient musical traditions o f Mali. Relying on danssa-doso, Koite's first album , "M uso Ko," topped the Hart Realty European w orld-m usic charts in 1995, "M am a Ya," envisioned as a "voyage through M ali," follow ed in 1999. K oite's latest release, " Afriki," was one o f the top world- music album s o f 2007. Koite's near-universal appeal led to his 2002 collab o ratio n with Bonnie Raitt on her album "Silver Lining." Such partnerships have earned Koite a reputation as a for ward-thinker. "W ith one foot in the past and the other in the future," noted National Geographic, "Habib Koite is an artist for a generation that has w itnessed the breaking down o f cultural barriers." "H abib Koite can incorporate ancient them es into modern mu sic," said Swan. "His concerts with Bam ada are bold, inventive and always beauti ful."
