Laurie Freeman brings 2 0 years experience in pediatric nursing to the new 24-hour emergency
department at Emanuel Children's Hospital in north Portland.
Legacy Emanuel C hildren’s
Hospital in north Portland has
expanded pediatric health ser
v ices w ith a new 2 4 -h o u r
children's em ergency depart
ment.
Medical experts around the
country believe that children's
emergency departm ents are vi
tal to the quality o f care for
young children.
A recent report from the In
stitute of M edicine in W ashing
ton em phasized the importance
of specialized care for children's
medical em ergencies in desig
nated pediatric em ergency de
partments.
H ighly sk illed c h ild re n 's
em ergency teams have exper
tise in age specific care and
proper diagnosis o f newborns,
infants, toddlers, school aged
kids and teens. At Emanuel, the
children’s em ergency team rec
ognizes the need for separate
children’s em ergency services
and prides itself on a family-
centered care approach.
The team also strives to en
sure that each child feels safe
and unafraid, so that the young
patient will have a good experi
ence.
Dr. William Lennarz, in charge
o f pediatric em ergency m edi
cine at Emanuel, says the com
m itm ent to ch ild ren ’s em er
gency services is vital.
“Our children's em ergency
departm ent is really a big deal
for parents especially,” Lennarz
says. “They know when they
com e here, their child w on’t
have to com pete for care with
adult em ergency patients. We
just focus on kids, and bring
special knowledge and skills to
their bedside.”
