PREDATORS OF THE SERENGETI and the RED APE RESERVE

Metro is requesting Bids for the construction of the Predators of the
Serengeti and Red Ape Reserve Exhibits in accordance with the
plans and specifications included in the RFB. It is the intent of Metro
to s e le ct a gene ra l co n tra cto r to co n stru ct the gene ra l, site,
m echanical and electrical portions of the project. The Oregon Zoo
will perform and contract certain portions of the project including,
but not lim ited to, irrigation, rock work, dem olition, excavation,
caging, mesh and displays with Zoo staff, or other work as deem ed
by the Zoo to be necessary and appropriate.
Sealed Bids m ust be delivered to Oregon Zoo, 4001 S.W. Canyon
Road, Portland, OR 97221 to the attention of Steve Chaney, Project
Manager, no later than 2:00 p.m., June 3,2008. Bidders names will be
publicly read at that time. First Tier Subcontractor form s are due
from all bidders within tw o hours of the bid due tim e or the bid will
be considered non-responsive.
Examination of the proposed work is Mandatory for all General contractors
bidding the work. General Contractors must register at the Zoo and have
secured at least one complete set of plans and specifications. Site visits will
need to be scheduled for all potential prime contractors, and sub-contractors,
by calling in advance to Steve Chaney at the Oregon ZOO, by calling 503-525-
4297. Sets of plans and specifications will be available at the Zoo by placement
of a $200.00 deposit, for each complete set. Complete sets or individual
sheets may be purchased from Ford Graphics Planwell. PDF plans are available

Summary of Work
• Metro requires the services of an experienced general contractor,
with a varied set of construction disciplines, to work with Zoo
staff in the construction of the Predators of the Serengeti and Red
Ape Reserve exhibits, which will be used to house lions, cheetahs,
wild dogs and other African predators, along with an addition to
the existing primate building to house the Red Ape species. The
projects will com bine som e existing spaces with construction of
new spaces. The project has considerable structural, mechanical
and electrical work.
The work contem plated consists of:
1. Modification of portions of existing Interpretive Buildings, Visitor
Arcades, Anim al Holding Buildings and retaining walls, including
selective walls, rock and site walkways.
2. Interpretive Buildings and Visito r Arcades - New fram e and
concrete additions, glass view ing areas, skylights, animal caging,
storage and service areas, m echanical and electrical system s.
3. Outdoor Exhibits M odification to mesh steel structure, site
drainage and grading, new electrical and mechanical system s, and
anim al caging.
4. Anim al H olding Areas - New concrete additions, new fram e and
concrete structures, skylights, new animal caging, new mechanical
and electrical system s.
5. Plaza and Pathways - New path and plaza paving, new grading,
new fram e and concrete plaza structures, handrails and guardrails,
m echanical and electrical system s.
• The construction will be in accordance with all applicable building
standards, zoo industry best practices, and the attached plans
and specifications.
• The Predators of the Serengeti exhibit must be complete by August
1,2009, and ready for public use and viewing. The red Ape Reserve
m ust be com plete no later then Novem ber 1, 2009 Construction
m obilization and perm its required for this work m ust be available
before starting.
• Construction shall not hinder the operations of the Oregon Zoo.
W eekend and evening work m ay be perm itted with appropriate
notice to arrange for access and security.
• The area of construction is fenced and separated off from the
general public in order to minimize disruption and inconvenience
to Zoo operations and Zoo patrons.
