vices presented a youth summit
and banquet with the Honorable
Judge Greg Mathis of the TV show
“Judge Mathis" who is a national
success story and a symbol of hope
for today ’ s youth in urban America.
Over 400 people attended the
April 27 event at the Lloyd Center
Double Tree Hotel with local Afri­
can American leader Ray Leary
serving as master of ceremonies.
The summit was the result of
Comer Stone Pastor B. E. Johnson ’ s
vision of encouraging the youth to
do the right things, stay in school,
and work toward productive fu­
tures in spite of difficulties they
face in their schools and commu­
nity.
Honored guests included par­
ents and teachers of Jefferson High
School; the Jefferson High School
Girls 5A state championship bas­
ketball team; the Jefferson High
School Boys 5A state champion­
ship basketbal I team; the Grant High
School Boys 6A state champion­
ship team and their cheerleaders;
and the Portland State University
Men's Big Sky championship team.
Other distinguished dignitaries
included Michael A. Cobb of the
Oregon Department of Transporta-
tion; Mikal H. Shabazzof theCity of
Portland; Dr Algic Gatewood, presi­
dent of Portland Community Col­
lege -Cascade campus; Peggy Ross,

Esteem ed support was also
given through the attendance of
Judge AncerL. Haggerty, State Rep.
Chip Shields. State Sen. Margaret
Carter and Dr Ered Grey, the attor­
ney that represented Rosa Parks in
the Montgomery, Ala. bus boy­
cott, a lawsuit that led to the 1956
Supreme Court decision declaring
segregated seating on buses un­
constitutional. Grey also repre­
sented Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
when he was jailed for acts of civil
disobedience.
Corliss McKeever from the Afri­
can American Health Coalition
talked about health concerns and
preventative care in the African-
American community.
"With so much unrest in our
community and our city—drug re-
lated deaths, drive by shootings,
hate crimes, parents against chil­
dren, children against parents, ra­
cial prejudice and discrimination—
it is time to make a difference in the
lives ofour youth,” said Pastor B.E.
Johnson.
Johnson also spoke about the
programs that Cornerstone Com­
munity Services offers in the com ­
munity and the plans toexpandand
develop more life enriching oppor­
tunities for young people.
A jo b fair on the same day as
the banquet also attracted the
City o f Portland's Development
Services, Police Bureau aqd Eire
and Rescue Bureau; the Oregon
D epartm ent o f Transportation;
and the US Army. The outreach
was aimed at promoting economic
opportunities that ultimately pro­
vide a living family wage.
