O nce the students reach their high sch o o l
diplo m a, an average o f 74 credits have been
earned tow ard an A sso c ia te 's D egree. M any o f
them continue on to graduate from PC C w ith a
tw o-y ear degree. As o f June 30, 7 3 -percent
contin u ed on to p o st-secondary ed u catio n and
2 6 - p e r c e n t o f g r a d u a te s h a v e e a r n e d an
a sso c ia te ’s d egree, b a ch elo r’s d egree or c e rtifi­
c a te .
T h ro u g h o u t the program , stu d en ts are a s­
signed a R esource S pecialist like M ary K elley,
w ho helps students select classes, p rovides them
e n c o u ra g e m en t an d su p p o rt, h elp s stu d en ts
through personal o b stacles and w orks as a m en­
tor to each student.

“ H igh school is traditional," says H uddle, “but
it is not alw ays right forev ery o n e. S om e kids find
high school difficult because they have a hard
tim e acad em ically , their teach er w a sn 't there
forth em , they felt like nobody cared, had troubles

attending, had problem s w ith their fam ily or had
problem s speaking E nglish."
H ardy likes having the freedom o f the G TC
Program , w here she can set her ow n school
schedule and get the individual support that she
needs.
"W h o ev er thought o f this program w as a
genius. T his program gives kids another choice.
I had a friend w ho finished the program w ho was
pregnant,” says H ardy, “ I also have another
chance. I w ant to continue college after I g ra d u ­
ate. I’m a little scared, it’s a bigger yard but it is
still fenced. I can still go and see M ary K elley on
c a m p u s.”
T he G atew ay to C ollege Program operates in
Portland, C lackam as, E lizabeth C ity, N .C., P hila­
delphia, San A ntonio, T exas, R iverside, C alif,
and m any o ther cities in the nation. In the fall o f
2008, another eight sites will be selected around
the country that will launch G atew ay to C ollege
giving m ore students the opportunity to succeed
in school.
