to stop the court ordered integra­
tion of the University of Alabama
by "standing in the schoolhouse
door” and personally refusing en­
trance to black students and Jus­
tice Department officials. Presi­
dent John F. Kennedy then feder­
alizes the Alabama National Guard
and Gov. Wallace removes him­
self from blocking the entrance of
the students.
• Medgar Evers, NA ACP leader
in Jackson, Miss., is assassinated
at his home.

the first large-scale integrated
protest march, is held in Wash-
ington, D.C. Dr. King delivers his

King urged President Johnson's challenge for Congress to pass
constitu tion a l legislation th a t had been deadlocked upon the
assassination o f President Kennedy on November 2 2, 1 96 3.
Publicly supporting Johnson through the Civil Rights Act and a
decisive reelection in 1 96 4, King expressed o ptim ism that
Johnson's term would ben efit African Am ericans until the April 4,
1 9 6 7 "Beyond Vietnam ” speech revealed King's disillusion m en t
with Johnson’s progress.

Gov. Wallace orders Alabama state troopers to stop
the court-ordered integration of Alabama's elementary
and high schools until he is enjoined by court injunc­
tion. Four young girls are killed in a Birmingham church
bombing.
President Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

• The Council of Federated Organizations initiates
the Mississippi Summer Project, a voter-registration
drive organized and run by black and white students;
Dr. King joins other SCLC workers in a demonstration
for the integration of public accommodations in St.
Augustine, Fla. He is jailed.
• Dr. King's book. Why We Can't Wait, is published
by Harper & Row; Three civil-rights workers, James
Chaney (black), Andrew Goodman and Michael
Schwemer (both white), are reported missing after a
short trip to Philadelphia. Miss.
• Dr. King attends the signing of the Public Accom­
modations Bill, (Part of the Civil Rights Act ot 1964) by
President Lyndon B. Johnson in the White House.
• Riotsoccur in Harlem, N.Y. One black man is killed.
Riots occur in New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
• The bodies of civil-rights workers James Chaney,
Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwemer are discov­
ered by FBI agents buried near the town of Philadelphia,
