Bryan Pata was shot to death in
N ovem ber 2(X)6 several miles from
T ay lo r's hom e in an unsolved kill
ing.
At Redskins Park in Ashburn.
Va., fans began a m akeshift m em o
rial by laying flow ers on a field near
the front entrance. Several people
paid silent respects at T aylor's park
ing space, a rew ard he received as
the team 's defensive player o f the
w eek in a gam e against Philadel
phia in Septem ber.
D octors had been encouraged
late M onday when Taylor squeezed
a n u rse's hand, according to Vinny
Cerrato, the R edskins' vice presi
dent o f football operations. But
Sharpstein said he w as told T aylor
never regained consciousness af
ter being taken to the hospital, and
h e w a s n 't su re h o w he h ad
squeezed the n u rse's hand.
“ M aybe he w as trying to say
goodbye or som ething," Sharpstein
said.
Taylor, the fifth overall pick in
the 2004 NFL draft following an All-
A m erican season at M iam i, was
shot early M onday in the upper leg,
dam aging the key femoral artery
and causing significant blood loss.
“A ccording to a prelim inary in
vestigation. it appears that the vic
tim was shot inside the hom e by an
intruder." M iam i-D adeC ounty po
lice said in a statem ent. "W e do not
have a subject description at this
time."
T he attack cam e ju st eight days

Sharpstein said T ay lo r’s girl
friend told him the couple was aw ak
ened by loud noises, and Taylor
grabbed a m achete he keeps in the
bedroom for protection. Someone
then broke through the bedroom
door and fired two shots, one m iss
ing and one hitting Taylor.
A private man with a small inner
circle, T aylor rarely granted inter
views. But, behind the scenes, T ay
lor was described as personable
and smart.
A fter T aylor was drafted, prob
lems soon began. Taylor fired his
agent, then skipped part o f the
N FL ’s m andatory rookie sym po
sium, draw ing a $25,000 fine. Driv
ing hom e late front a party during
the season, he was pulled over and
charged with drunken driving. The
case was dism issed in court, but by
then it had becom e a monthslong
distraction for the Redskins.

"We're not digging up old arrangem ents; we're
creating new ideas. That's w hat's so beautiful about
interpretation. This music, it's not about age as much
as it is about style, and about always trying to move
the music forward." John Pizzarelli
