African Am erican Health
Coal it ion exercise classes, cred
ited by county health officials
for helping reducing heart-dis
ease rates in the local black
population, have a new lease on
life.
The coalition has been in dire
need of financial support with
an anticipated loss of $880,000
in federal funding from Centers
for Disease Control.
Providence presented the
health coalition Friday with a
$35,000 check that will allow
the AAHC to continue its free
exercise program at the Matt
Dishman Parks and Recreation
Community Center in northeast
Portland until Dec. 31.
Other AAHC private classes
not organized through PP&R
will have to wait for additional
funding sources. Pleased with
the potential for small amounts
of money to make a huge differ
ence for a community, Provi
dence will join AAHC in the
quest for alternate grants to pro
vide more long-term funding.

Tiirning Garbage Truck Kills Bicyclist
(AP) — A garbage truck turning
right from North Interstate to
Greeley Avenue crushed a bicy
clist in a bike lane Monday.
Police said Brett Jarolimek, 31,
tried but failed to brake, collided
with the truck and fell beneath the
rear wheels.
The truck and bicycle were
headed downhill, police said, and
the bicycle gained speed. Police
said the truck driver had a turn
signal on, and drugs and alcohol
didn't appear to be a factor.
Robert Reid, a Portland attorney
who stopped his bike at the scene
of the accident, said police need to
cite drivers whodon't yield the right
of way tocyclists in a bike lane. But
Portland Police Lt. Mark Kruger
O regon C ity , Oregon
4:53 p.m .
said solving the problem requires
more than just faulting drivers.
Cyclists need to ride defensively
and be aware if they are moving too
fast or are in a place where motor
ists can't see them, he said, adding
that he couldn't comment on the
specifics of Monday's collision.

dead right."
