Palmer, a Zulu who grew up
poor on a small farm in South
Africa, escaped apartheid at age
17 by traveling to England. W hen
that country refused her asylum,
she came to the U.S., where she
com pleted her education and
launched a career in research on
the causes and cures o f diseases
affecting poor people in devel­
oping countries.
Also included in the confer­
ence were an African youth fash­
ion show and African music pro­
vided by DJ Menzies.
