Landfill Site Becomes Park Dream
continued
from Front
to prevent children from entering the
chutes needed to release methane-
gas pressure during emergencies.
Other major difficulties they dis
cussed include where to place park
ing, how to prevent homeless en
campments, the noise of Columbia
Boulevard and access to a site bor
dered by other physical barriers.
The Cully Neighborhood Asso
ciation did hold a dream of reserving
a comer of the site for community
gardens, which officials see as pos
sible given the regular tests for chemi
cals in the soil.
The acreage’s potential fora large
number of ball fields represent its
primary asset, according to officials.
They hope to relieve the environ
mental pressure on Whitaker Ponds
Natural Area off Northeast 52nd and
Columbia Boulevard, by encourag
ing the bulk of its Lakeside Little-
League activity to take place at the
future Thomas Cully Park.
Little-leaguers have pledged to re
sist any move, but the parks depart
ment responded by promising that no
one would be forced to do anything.
So far the Cully Park planning pro
cess has yielded many more limita
tions and concerns than ambitions.
Some think any negative dynamic
could soon shift with a change in
priorities.
“If people want an Olympic-sized
swimming pool, it’s probably not
going to happen,” says KC Cooper,
a consultant contracted for the site,
“but it’s a good thing to do to turn
what was essentially adamaged land
scape into something that will he a
jewel, not only for that neighbor
hood, but also for the entire city.”
The first of three public meetings
on the Cully Park master plan will
provide an opportunity for involve
ment. The session is scheduled Nov.
3 from 9:30a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Word
of Life Community Church, 4927 N.E.

Chutes that release built-up methane from a former landfill present a concern for commu
nity members seeking to build a park over a northeast Portland site reclaimed from its
gravel-pit days o f the 1920s to its use as a construction-waste dump site until it was
covered by a protective membrane in the ‘80s.
