Local Brothers Build Luxury Homes
Venture in sound
construction and
minority
entrepreneurship
Two new condominiums are near
ing completion at 34 and 38 N.E.
Going St., but these are no ordinary
homes. These condos represent a new
level of accomplishment for infill de
velopment.
Robel and Meron Alemseghed im
migrated to the United States from
Eritrea at an early age. They grew up
in northeast Portland, where they have
resided for the past 25 years.
After closing down the long estab
lished family business, Red Sea Res
tau ran t
and
N ig h tclu b , the
Alemsegheds turned their attention to
restoring vintage Portland homes. They
then naturally progressed to building
new construction homes. They formed
Bridgecity Group in 2006 specifically
to develop urban infill projects with
environmentally sensitive techniques.
Bridgecity recently transformed a
relatively small vacant lot at the cor
ner of Northeast Going and Cleveland
into unique, contemporary, high-den
sity housing for the future.
Meron and Robel worked closely
with the designer in order to incorpo
rate a multitude of innovative design
features. The end product resulted in
two attached town-home-style con
dominiums, with each unit featuring
over 1,600 square feet of living space,
distributed over three levels.
Each unit boasts three bedrooms
and 3.5 bathrooms, radiant floor heat,
aluminum-framed low-E windows, ar
tistic glass tile, slab granite counters
and a patio enveloped by a unique

exterior design accented with true
cedar siding.
The first level includes a one-car
garage, storage area, laundry facilities
and a bedroom suite. The second level
includes the living/diningarea, kitchen
and half bath. The third level is de
voted solely to the two master suites,
with views of downtown, the West
Hills and the Fremont Bridge.
The future residents of these units
will benefit from a coveted location
that is close to downtown, the Rose
Quarter, popular cultural events such
as the art walks on Northeast Alberta
Street and accessible public transpor
tation.
