Census Bureau's 1997 Survey ot Busi­ ness Owners. The Census Bu­ reau is currently com pleting analysis on the 2002 Survey ot Business Owners, and has re­ cently issued some prelim inary data from this survey. The fo l­ low ing is a brief summary o f statistical inform ation derived from the 1997 Survey o f Busi­ ness Owners. O f U S. businesses. 5.8 per­ cent were owned by Hispanic A m ericans. 4.4 percent by Asian Americans, 4.0 percent by African Americans, and 0.9 percent by American Indians. O f m in o rity -o w n e d b u si­ nesses, 39.5 percent were H is­ p a n ic-ow ne d, 30.0 percent A sian-ow ne d, 27.1 percent black-owned, and 6.5 percent native-owned. Business density is the num ­ ber o f in d ivid u a ls in the popu­ lation divided by the number o f businesses in the population - the low er the number, the higher the density. Business d e n s ity was 10.1 fo r nonm inorities, 11.7 fo r Asians and P acific Islanders, 12.6 fo r Am erican Indians and Alaska Natives, 29.4 fo r H ispanics, and 42.1 fo r Blacks. O f the 4,514,699 jobs in m i­ n o rity -o w n e d businesses in 1997, 48.8 percent were in Asian-owned firm s, 30.8 per­ cent in Hispanic-owned firm s, 15.9 percent in black-owned firm s, and 6.6 percent in native- owned firms.
