“Things such as loud, obnoxious
behavior and vulgar language are in­
timidating to riders,” Henderson said.
"They do not rise to the level o f crime,
but they are important to TriM et cus­
tom ers and important to us.”
The Transit Police Division con­
sists o f 36 sworn m em bers from six
different law enforcement agencies.
H alf o f the officers are assigned to
Portland with the remaining coming

M ultnom ah County S h eriff s Office,
M ilwaukie and Tigard.
Transit Police Division officers pro­
vide safety and security for the general
public and em ployees within T riM et's
575 square mile service area. This in­
cludes 92 bus mutes, 18 m ajor transit
centers, and 56 Park & Ride lots. C ur­
rently. TriM et has about 32O,(XX) daily
boardings on buses and M A X trains.

T o assist in crim e prevention. Tran­
sit Police Division officers make useo f
surveillance-cameras on all MAX trains,
about one third o f all M A X platforms
and on most buses. Additionally, the
cam eras also help officers in the apprc-
hension and prosecution o f criminals.

O ther missions performed periodi­
cally by the division include checking
for fares, undercover missions aboard
buses and trains, and partnering with
other police agencies to address com ­
munity issues. The goal of the missions
is crim e prevention. TriM et ridership
has increased yearly while crim e has
decreased. In 2006, the total num ber of
reported crim es com m itted against
TriM et custom ers dropped from the
previous year, to about one incident
per I (X).(XX) boardings.
