back Ian Johnson m arried the girl he
proposed to on national television, the
couple prayed to end prejudice.

Johnson, w ho is black, has said he re
ceived phone calls and about 30 letters,
including personal threats from people who
objected to his plans to marry his w hite
fiancee. Johnson has not described the
threats, and it is unclear where they cam e
from.
T he cerem ony began w ith the prayer and
ended w ith the couple ju m p in g over a broom
— an A frican tradition signifying the couple
ju m p in g into a new life together.
As they drove aw ay in a stretch limousine,
Johnson kissed his new w ife and said, “L e t's
play ball,” the Idaho Statesm an reported.
Johnson ran for a 2-point co n version on
