The Dances of Jacob Lawrence at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The show was inspired by the m ajestic p ain tin g s o f Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) who lived his final years in Seattle as a celebrated professor at Univer­ sity of Washington. Lawrence's art - ful 1 of rhythm, energy, motion and color - pro­ vides the impetus for a powerful evening o f four dance works choreographed by Seattle-based Donald Byrd, hip-hop pioneer Rennie Harris, DCDC Artistic D ire cto r K evin W ard and Guggenheim Fellow Reggie Wil­ son. Founded in 1968 by the late Jeraldyne Blunden, the Ohio- based company boasts the world's largest repertoire of works by A frican-A m erican choreogra­ phers. Thunderous applause greeted the Dayton dancers during a breathtaking perform ance in Portland in December2004. Both then and now, the show is spon­ sored by the White Bird/Portland State University Dance Series.
