Eduardo M edina M ora told a business forum that the vast m a jo rity o f arm s used by the sol diers o f drug cartels, including assault rifles and grenades, are sm uggled from the United States. "It's truly absurd that a per son can get together 50 to 100 high pow ered arm s, grenade launchers, fragm entation g re nades, and can transport this cargo to our country," M edina M ora said. "It's a task that needs a much more decided and deter mined effort from the U.S. gov ernm ent, and it's one o f the d e m ands we have put on the table." President Felipe C alderon, w ho took office on Dec. 1, has w aged a m ajor offensive against the cartels, sending more than 24,(XX) troops to regions ravaged by drug-related beheadings and execution-style slayings. He also has extradited several alleged kingpins to the United States, w inning the praise o f the U.S. Drug Enforcem ent Agency. But drug gangs have hit back, killing police officers across the country. Som etim es notes threat ening the federal governm ent have been left near the bodies.
