In his book. Attention Deficit H y p eractiv ity D isorder, Dr. Russell Barkley, suggests that 70 percent o f juvenile offenders and 40 percent o f adult prison­ ers have ADHD and many are undiagnosed or untreated. Locally, OHSU is m aking an effort to understand more about ADHD, especially as it relates to African Americans and other populations. From 2001-2005, the ADHD research team at OHSU School o f Nursing conducted a research study to explore how families manage ADHD and what sup­ ports they need in helping their children. Family members stated that their main concerns ranged from difficulty obtaining services for their child, lack of Spanish speaking skills with health professionals and refer­ ral bias towards African-Ameri­ can and Hispanic families. There are two ways OHSU will provide assistance for fami­ lies impacted by ADHD in fu­ ture trials. Participants will be randomly assigned a group. The intervention group, which in­ cludes home-based nurse case- management or an information, based group, which is provided with written information only.
