The Tragedies Theater Companyjoins forces with Third Eye Theatre to present “The Scarlet Gala, " a Saturday, Feb. 17 fundraiser for the Village Ballroom on Northeast Dekum Street. The event takes place at Jackman Joe's, 1111 N.W. 16th Ave. Fundraising performance Saturday The Tragedies Theater Com ­ pany will host The Scarlet Gala, their first major fundraiser to reno­ vate the Vi liage Ballroom on North­ east Dekum Street and Seventh Avenue. The event takes place Saturday, Feb. 17, from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.atJackmanJoe's, 1111 N.W. 16th Ave. Food and beverages will be served, with live entertainment by local comic and musical talents, in­ cluding pianist Amoree Lovell, stand-up com ic Danny Norton, improv and sketch comics Fish­ bowl Catharsis and members of The Tragedies. Artisticdirector Brian Linsssaid theater members are committed to preserving the historic ballroom. “We are also committed to fos­ tering the revitalization of north­ east Portland," he said. “By taking overthe Village Ballroom, we hope to create a community space offer­ ing classes, performances and edu­ cational programs,” Third Eye Theatre, a partner in the effort, is currently working on a program to educate at-risk youths with a conservatory theater. This program would be housed at the site. The Village Ballroom isa4,8(X)- square foot structure built in 1909, formerly called the Scarlet Ballroom and the Rose City Ballroom. The Tragedies and Third Eye hope to bring the Ballroom back to its former glory and restore it as a prem iere Portland perform ance space.
