Mother Remembered for Peace and Kindness
Sherry Shambry
Funeral services were held Feb. 11,2(M)7 at
Cox&Cox Funeral Chapel for Sherry Ann Bell,
who died Feb. 5,2007.
Sherry was bom on Jan. 5 , 1957, in Carthage,
Texas to Bennie Dell and Mettie Dorothy Bell.
At the age of three the family moved to Port
land. Sherry attended Boise Elementary School
in northeast Portland and graduated from
Washington High School in 1975, where she
was on the Honor Roll and President of the
"Black Student Union."
Sherry was smart in her studies and extended
her education to the “Upward Bound" program
and Portland Community College. She accepted
Christ as a teenager and was baptized in 1973 at
New Hope Baptist Church under Pastor New
ton.
Sherry enjoyed singing in the choir. In her
young years she worked hard, holding two jobs
in food services. She married Minister Charles
E. Shambry, Sr., in 1978 and had two healthy
sons, Charles E. Jr. and David R. Shambry. After
her divorce she went to many churches, deter
mined to bring up her sons in the service of the
Lord. She joined the Rose of Sharon Seventh
Day Adventist Church, in Portland, under the
Pastorship of Rev. McCarthy. There she at
tended Sabbath School and participated in
many life-changing seminars and crusades.
She has many certificates of completion of
studies.
Sherry was very proud when she won the
grand prize of a beautiful white Bible for bring
ing the most people to a crusade. Sherry loved
her family and took good care of her dad Bennie,
for a period of time by cooking, cleaning and
chauffeuring him around town. She had the
peace of Job. Sherry was beautiful, and the
oldest of four children. She was pleasant and
always calling, writing and sending cards and
letters. She enjoyed making crafts, watercolor
painting and writing poetry. She kept acalendar
of all the family, including nieces’, nephews’
and friends’ birthdays. She rem em bered
everyone’s birthday! Sherry would always
donate food and clothes to her sister’s church
and ministry and often attended programs there.
She saved cans, bottles and pennies to support
their youth program "The CREW ”. Sherry was
a good driver and would often pick up her
friends and take them to the grocery store, out
to lunch and shopping. She was always on time
and dependable! She will truly be missed, as
she was pretty, kind, loving, humorous, sin
cere, talented, spiritual with a friendly loving
smile, a good mother and aunt, good friend and
the Best Sister. We miss you Sherry!
She leaves her sons Charles E. Jr., and David
