strike, a pivotal moment in the
late 20th-century human rights
movem ent. This is the first book
to tel I the story of the strike, which
started after two sanitation work-
ers died in their truck due to out
dated equipm ent and the indiffer
ence of their white supervisors.
Their deaths touched off one of
the most significant labor strikes
in the history of the nation, one
that before its end would rock the
plantation mentality of M emphis'
governm ent to its core and, on
April 4, 1968, see the tragic death
o f Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Honey masterfully untangles the
complex relations and events of
1968 with a scholar's eye and the
passion of one who himself partici
pated in the movement.
Honey is professor of African-
American and labor studies and
American history at the University
of Washington Tacoma. He is a
nationally-recognized expert on
civil rights and labor issues.
