I have the strength to go and do
anything. N othing is too hard, which
is why I decided to com e to P ort

Portland isn't exactly M issis
sippi. The change in location was
ju st another piece o f adversity that
T raylor and her family had to get
over.
”1 cam e to a state where no one
knew my nam e." T raylor said. "It
w as com plete culture shock. But
Portland has been great. There are
chances for opportunity here that
w ere not present in the South. Yet

H er goal is to becom e a child d e v e lo p e d o v er the y ea rs has

"I strongly believe this occupa upon your faith. I defied the statis

give serenity to children w ho are make it this far and this is ju st the
victims of similarcircumstances that beginning."
After the big move and adjust
I experienced in childhood,' I raylor
said. "I've obtained this skill o f being ing to h er new su rro u n d in g s,

to her hard work, she received a
2006-07 scholarship through the
PCC Foundation and was the key
note speaker at its recent annual
dinner banquet last October.
Now, T raylor is w orking to
wards a 2(X >8 graduation and after
that possibly enrol Intent at the Uni

is enjoying the encouragem ent
and flexibility o f the Cascade Cam
pus.
"The diversity here is aw e
some," she said. "It rem inds me of
home. People here speak to you
and shake your hand. It's the type
o f hospitality I'm used to."
W hat about her mother?
"My mom is aw esom e now,"
T raylor said. "She has been drug
free since my ninth grade in high
school. G od has helped take the
craving for drugs from her and is
now her drive. She is currently in
the ministry with my uncle. My
m other is also a student at PCC
working on her com m unications
degree and takes a jazz class with
me. A lot o f people here think she
is my sister. I say, 'No, that's my
mom!' We enjoy these years now
that she is better."
