“XTerra: X-perience X-treme X-citement”
By Kathleen Carr
In a market crowded with high-
posture posers, the Nissan Xterra
is the genuine article: a real, safari-
grade adventure vehicle that still
handles everyday life on pavement
with refinement and confidence.
The 2007 Xterra looks big, tough
and powerful; especially at the front,
where the massive bumper and V-
strut grille conspire to add bulk and
menace in rear-view mirrors. The
wheel wells are accentuated with
squared-offlines, adding muscular
shoulders to the X terra's stance.
Crowned with a rock-solid easy
access roof rack, the bodywork is
intended to suggest off-road per
formance. At the same time, Xterra
still projects a high-utility image. It
can handle wet or dirty cargo and
clean up like a champ. Nissan has
kept the Xterra true to its original
concept, for all your rugged off
road udventures with everything
you need and nothing you don’t.
The Xterra is substantial, sophisti
cated and refined but it’s not a
‘mommy-mobile’ masquerading as
a rugged SUV for outdoors types.
It is in fact a rugged SUV for out
doors types! After all, the Xterra is
no poser.
The 2007 Xterra inherited many
well-engineered capabilities from
the Nissan family tree: the fully
boxed ladder frame from the Titan
and the Armada. The power comes
via a 4.0-liter version of Nissan’s
acclaimed VQ V6 used in the 35OZ.
The Xterra shares Nissan’s F-Al-
pha platform, which underpins the
full-size Titan pickup and the Ar
mada SUV. As a result the Xterra is
an exceptionally capable off-road
vehicle, with attitude. The Nissan
Xterra is an excellent choice for
outdoor adventurers. The Xterra
cruises well on the highway and
handles curves like a thorough
bred. On the open road the 4.0-liter
V6, has some guts in the midrange,
offering very good throttle re
sponse, and accelerates well com
ing out of a comer.
The XterraOR (Off-Road), avail
able in 4W D only for 2007, adds
exclusive off-road features such as
electronic Hill Assist and Hill De
scent Control, which allows going
down steep, slippery hills without
constantly applying the brakes.
These sophisticated electronics are
designed to maintain traction and
stability on any terrain. All 4WD
Xterra models feature a locking rear
d iffe re n tia l; g a s-p re ssu riz e d
Bilstein shock absorbers; skid
plates; and BF Goodrich Rugged
Trail T/A tires. This utilily package
comes as a standard bundle on the
Xterra O R. except for the step rails,
which could impede Xtreme rock
climbing . The Off-Road model was
designed specifically for Xtreme
situations, because adventurous
out-of-the-way places are often
subject to changes in weather and
circumstance. All it takes is a little
rain, snow or falling rock to create
a major challenge for the posers.
The Xterra OR gracefully conquers
Xtreme situations with a well-
equipped arsenal: a truck-tough
transfer case with low range elec
tronic control, a solid rear axel, a
rugged chassis, rack-and-pinion
steering and speed-sensitive steer
ing assist. Vehicle Dynamic Con
trol (VDC), four-wheel disc brakes
with anti-lock (ABS), Electronic
Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and
