Ali Lends Name to Book Collection
Encouraging
children to read
and study
(A P) - M uham m ad Ali used to
recite poem s before his fights that
brashly predicted victory against
his ring opponents, but boxing's
poet laureate had to overcom e dys
lexia as a child to learn how to read
and write.
A new classroom collection o f
children's books bearing Ali’s name
is intended to help m otivate and
em pow er young students, particu
larly boys, to overcom e a different
kind o f obstacle to becom ing ac
com plished readers: disinterest.
Scholastic Corp.'s "Muhammad
Ali Presents G o the Distance" fea
tures books that cham pion Ali's val
ues and are aimed at socially disad
vantaged students in grades 3-8 who
believe neither reading nor educa
tion is relevant to their lives, says
Lonn ie AI i, the box ing legend's wi fe.
"The foundation o f all educa
tion is reading," she says. "Books
can take a child outside o f his im m e

that next jo urney out."
The collection includes a wide
range o f m ulticultural fiction and
nonfiction books that generally
reflect the interests o f young boys
in u nd erserv ed classro o m s b e
cause, on average, they read far
less than their fem ale counterparts.
"A lot o f it has to do with subject
material — getting the interest o f
the child, to m ake them read," Ali
says. "The more you make a child
read, the more they are motivated.
The more motivation they have, the
more they seek out books to read
and the more they becom e em pow
ered by w hat they read and em pow
ered with w hat they can do."
Som e o f the titles in the collec
tion include: "Stealing Home: The
Story o f Jackie Robinson," about
the legendary athlete w ho broke

"H unterm an and the Crocodile," a

a young boy and a dog who bond

liner: and "Touching Spirit Bear." a
story o f a young boy's journey
from self-destructive anger to for
giveness.
The collection w ouldn't be co m

The Story o f M uham m ad Ali."
