Holiday Tradition Takes Stage
Yuletide Spectacular, a Portland
holiday tradition for the entire fam­
ily, will be presented by the Oregon
Symphony on Saturday, Dec. 16 at
3 p.m. and 7:30p.m.; Sunday, Dec.
17 at 3 p.m.; and Monday, Dec. 18
at 7:30p.m. at the Arlene Schnitzer
Concert Hall, with an additional
perf ormance on Friday, Dec. 15 at 8
p.m. at the Smith Auditorium in
Salem.
The festive line-up includes a
retelling of Charles Dickens' “A
Christmas Carol,” a 24-member the­
atrical cast, and show-slopping
musical and dance numbers.
The symphony will perform sev­
eral holiday arrangements includ­
ing, “Silent Night" and "Bring a
Torch Jeanette Isabella."
“This is always the biggest pro­
duction each year," said Artistic
Administrator CharlesCalmer. “It’s
our gift to the community, with
about 75 people involved in sing­
ing, dancing, acting— all to mesh
nicely with the orchestra."

of Happyness is the story of Chris
Gardner, a family man struggling to
make ends meet. Inspired by true
events, the film opens nationwide
on Friday, Dec. 15.
In an incredible performance that

portrays Gardner, the bright and
talented but marginally employed
salesman who, alongside his son,

mother of his five-year-old son

reluctantly decides to leave her
husband and child.
Gardner, now a single father,
continues to doggedly pursue a
better-paying job using every sales
skill he knows. He lands an intern­
ship at a prestigious stock broker­
age firm, and although there is no
salary, he accepts, hopeful he will
end the*program with a job and a
promising future.
Without a financial cushion,
G ardner and his son are soon
evicted from their apartment.
