Franklin Duets with Blige on ‘Bobby’
Kennedy
connection
beyond
soundtrack
(AP)-- Aretha Franklin's con
nection to Robert Kennedy goes
tar beyond her appearance on
the "Bobby" soundtrack.
The Queen of Soul, who per
forms a duet on the album w ith
Mary J. Blige. used to perform at
the old Ambassador Hotel in Los
Angeles, where Kennedy was
assassinated in 1968. and also
sang at Kennedy's memorial ser
vice.
So when her agent called and asked her if she'd sing
on the soundtrack to "Bobby," the new film centered
around Kennedy's assassination. "I said I would love
to do it," Franklin told The Associated Press.
"Like most people. I appreciated the Kennedys, and
I did do Bobby's memorial service at Arlington (N a
tional) Cemetery and met the rest of the family and
thought very highly of them." Franklin said in a phone
interview last week. "I just couldn't let it pass."
f ranklin said she learned even more about Kennedy
through her involvem ent in the project. The final
song on the soundtrack, out Tuesday, features a
speech by the late politician.
I had no idea Bobby Kennedy was as deep as he
was." Franklin said. "He really had a lot of sub
stance ami content."
She also talked about the "aw ful" lime of turmoil
in the nation that the movie depicts through the
lives of several fictional characters.
"It’s really something that we should all take a
look at again." she said.
Franklin performs the inspirational song "Never
Gonna Break My Faith, with Blige; previously ap
pearing on a Blige album. Re
garding work with Blige. Franklin
said: "It's always delightful. We
had fun. She’s a younger artist
whom I appreciate."
But Franklin seems to have
had the most fun working on
her ow n u p co m in g alb u m ,
which she plans to release in
February on her own label.
Aretha's Records.
"I've got a lot of good stuff,
a lot o f good stuff — I'm very
J»>*
very happy with all of it," she
said of the record, which also
includes a duet with Faith Hill.

Dedicates song
at awards show
(AP) - It was a more-than-un-
predictable night for Oscar winner
Jamie Foxx at the American Music
Awards program Nov. 21 at the
Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Not only did he snag his first
AMA, for best soul-R&B male art
ist, but his biological mother at
tended the show. He hadn't seen
her in years.
"I dedicate this song, y'all, to my
mother in the audience, and every
one. I hope you allow me to be
myself," Foxx said, introducing a
performance of his song "Wish U
Were Here" from 2(M)5’s "Unpre
dictable."
Backstage. Foxx waxed poetic
about his mother being present.

raise me. A lady adopted my bio-
