The 30-year nurse, standing five-foot-seven and weighing 260 pounds, struggled with Haffey, w ho w as about fiv e-fo o t-n in e inches and 180 pounds. She m an­ aged to strangle H affey after suf­ fering a few scrapes and bruises. By the tim e police arrived at 6:51 p.m ., they found Haffey, a co n ­ victed felon with a long record, dead in her home. Under state statute, a person can use a reasonable degree of deadly force when defending them­ selves against an intruder or som e­ one who is burglarizing their home.
