Kennedy Jr., one o f the country’s leading environm ental activists, and the son o f Robert Kennedy will kick off a w eekend celebration in southeast Portland for sustainable and organic living. The purpose of the celebration is to prom ote sustainable living pract ices or a way o f I i fe that doesn' t deplete our destroy our natural re­ sources and thereby enhance the health o f our world, our neighbor­ hoods and ourselves. St. PhilipNeri Parish was recently awarded the 2005 Green Congrega- tion Award by Ecum enical M inis­ tries o f O regon for environm ental stew ardship. Kennedy has been nam ed by Tim e m agazine as one o f the "H e­ roes o f the Planet" for his exem ­ plary work on behalf o f the environ­ ment. He serves as senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, chief prosecuting attor­ ney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and president o f the W aterkeeper Alliance. The job fair is a premierjob-search event that attracts more than 850jo b ­ seekers every year. The event, free and open to the public, showcases the opportunities with dozens of employers. There will be drawings, door prizes and refreshments. Page A3 Residents Flee Burning Schrunk Tower Residents had to scram ble out o f bed to get out to safety after a tire broke out in the Schrunk Tow er, a low -incom e housing high-rise in the St. Johns neighborhood o f north Portland M onday. No one was hurt. But several people were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. The tire broke out about 1:45 a.m. D ozens o f people were aw akened by neighbors banging on doors to alert others o f the tire. W itnesses said som e residents could not or would not budge and had to be helped out by Firefighters. Several rooms were heavily dam aged by fire and many more have smoke and w ater dam age. The building's tire suppression sprinkler sys­ tem helped to control the Barnes which started on the fourth Boor. Firefighters were working to Figure out a cause o f the tire. K ulongoski’s Task Force on Equality is to help identify potential changes in slate law to guarantee all O regonians adequate protection from sexual orientation and gender identity discrim ination. The task force's mission includes reviewing anti-discrim ination laws adopted in Oregon cities and counties in com parison to other states. "I want to hear from the public how we can strengthen the basic rights o f every O rego­ nian,” K ulongowski said. The task force will provide a final report to the governor’s office by Dec. I .
