“Because o f poverty, ignorance

America like a serial killer," said
Jackson, chairman of Rainbow
Push Coalition. Jackson didn't
make the conference, but issued
a statement o f support with the
other leaders.
“ But we have also been a com

A candlelight vigil by Arab-
American families and their friends
on Saturday in the downtown South
Park Blocks raised $31,6«) for
groups delivering emergency sup

the American Red Cross, Mercy
Corps and American Near East

The vigil was supported by
prominent Arab-Americans in Port
land including former Gov. Victor
Atiyeh.
"It is so very depressing to see
and hear about the destruction of
Lebanon and especially the loss
o f so many civilian women, chil
dren and men, said Atiyeh. "This
invasion by one country into
another cannot be tolerated by
A m erica and the rest o f the
world."
Atiyeh and others criticized the
generous amount of support Israel
receives lor guns and ammunition
from the United States.
“ Arab-Am ericans are devas
tated by the destruction of Leba

the bombs raining down on these
