He was born on May 19, 1944 in
Portland, Ore. to the late A rthur L.
and Fentrice B. Smith. He was the
fifth child and the only boy o f eight
children.
He received his education at
Elliot Elementary and Jefferson High
School. He worked as a laborer, and
for a short tim e com peted as a pro­
fessional boxer. His first am ateur
fight was at the age o f 14, w here he
w on a m atch against a 21-year-old
m an w ho was in the Navy.
W ade was a "south paw;” a lefty.
If you were looking for the right, he
w as jabbing with the left. He w as a
tw o-tim e w inner o f the N ational
G olden G love Cham pionship: one
in 1962 and the other in 1963. In
2005, W ade was inducted into the
O regon Boxing Hall o f Fame.

buy licorice for his mother. Later,
instead o f asking his parents for
money, he w ould also sell bottles to
go to Knott Street so he could box.
W ade loved his sisters and was
very protective o f them. W hile in
hospice, he alw ays told the nurses
and social w orkers that his sisters
w ould alw ays be there for him and
that he was rich; not m onetarily but
b e c a u s e o f th e
love o f his family.

to deliver Standards-Based Tutoring at selected, eligible school
sites in Multnomah County. Standards-Based Tutoring will provide
students in grades K-12 with intensive, individualized after school
tutoring powered by the HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed)
Learning System, a scientifically research-based program that is
aligned to the Oregon State Standards. DSCP's goal in the 2006-
07 school year is to deliver Standards-Based Tutoring at 5 school
sites, to at least 250 students. Tutoring will be offered for
students needing assistance with Reading, Math and English as
a Second Language (ESL).
