Friends and family knew Eddie as “Eezy Baby” because of his smile, jokes and love for people. He was a talented basketball player from first grade till the day he died, collapsing on the Grant High School basketball court due to sudden cardiac arrest in February 2005. Because of Johnson’s foundation, in July 2005 a bill was signed into law in Oregon, making Automatic Exter nal Defibrillators mandatory in ev ery health and fitness center and school district. The law is named the Graeme Jones and Eddie Barnett Jr. Memorial Act, and now several Port- land-area schools own an automatic clim b. Because of who and what Eezy Baby was, his legacy will live on through the awareness, education and support for an estimated 300,000 people in the United States living with HCM. Those who'd like to make a difference in the name of Barnett and others diagnosed with HCM can par ticipate in the Walk For Life. The Rose Festival-sanctioned four- mile walk starts at Jefferson High School at North Commercial and Killingsworth and finishes at Grant High School at Northeast 33rd Av enue and Thompson. Mayor Tom Potter and Oregon Rep. Mark Hass are scheduled to attend, and a celebration at Grant with music, vendors, info booths and more will follow the walk Registration is $ 15 for adults, $ 10 for students. Pre-registration is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. the day of the event. To pre-register or find more informa tion. visit www.eddiebarnettjr.org or cal 1503-756-8541.
