Breaking barriers
to health care
For hundreds of churchgoers,
health care conies in the form of a
parish health promoter. Providence
Portland Medical Center’s program
reached a significant milestone this
spring, with nearly 1 (X) volunteers
now serving the community’s low-
income and often Spanish-speak
ing residents.
The health promoters are volun
teers who serve in five local par
ishes, including St. A nne's, St.
Peter’s, Ascension, Holy Cross and
Holy Redeemer.
They staff health fairs at par
ishes, offering classes on cancer,
children’s health, nutrition, domes
tic violence and much more. They
also help parishioners navigate
through other needed services,
such as clinics, helping people with
transportation to and translations
for medical appointments, social
services and visit with homebound
elderly and people with chronic ill
nesses.
The program is co-sponsored
