Housing Cost Seniors Can Postpone
Property tax
deferrals
offered
The Oregon Department
of Revenue reminds Orego­
nians that April 17 is the
filing deadline for the Senior
and Disabled Citizen Prop­
erty Tax Deferral programs.
T hese pro g ram s allow
qualified taxpayers to d e ­
fer paym ent o f their prop­
erty taxes on their hom es.
The state pays the taxes to
the county, m aintains the ac­
count, and charges the p rop­
erty ow ner 6-percent sim ple
interest, which also is d e­
ferred .
The deferral account bal­
ance is usually due when the
taxpayer receiving the d e ­
ferral dies, sells the p rop­
erty, perm anently m oves off
the p ro p e rty — for reasons
o ther than health— or if the
property changes ow nership.
A surviving spouse may
qualify to continue the p rop­
erty in deferral.

gram is to help keep senior
and disabled citizens in their
hom es, and not worry about
how they will pay their prop­
erty taxes each year,” said
