H alibut’s is a full-service restaurant with
the soul o f a sim ple fish and chip shack.
Ex-bartender and Portland native Dave
M ackay opened H alibut’s last A pril, add
ing a lounge, H alibut’s II, earlier this year.
M ackay said business is great, with his
crow ds so diverse " it’s ridiculous," but he
prom ises his menu w on't stray from a
traditional offering o f fish, chips, chow der
and cocktails.
Dishes hover around $ 10 and are m od
estly served up in paper-lined baskets.
But they pack a punch that M ackay says
is worthy o f fancier joints like Ja k e's Bar
and Grill.

“ I'm old school,” he said. “ I'v e got a
good sized piece o f fish cooked ju st right.”
M ackay said a successfully cooked
piece o f fish isn’t over breaded and is
perfectly timed. He personally cuts his
fish and m akes the chow der, buys his
batter weekly at Fred M eyer and tastes
every cocktail sauce to com e out o f the
kitchen.
"I d o n 't know about an English or Irish
style," he said, "m ine is my ow n.”
H alibut's has Friday night fish specials
and live blues every Thursday. M ackay’s
musical acts are culled from his 35 years in
the business, adding an elem ent o f enter
tainm ent to A lberta's monthly Last T hurs
day art walk.
“I want this to be a neighborhood place,”
he s a id , a d d in g th a t as b u s in e s s
progresses h e’d like to donate to the com
m unity and help local schools.
Halibut's is located at 2527 N.E. Alberta.
T h ey ’re open Sunday through W ednes
day 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Thursday
through Saturday 11:30 a.m. to midnight.

said he had the locks changed after clinic
property showed up missing in December.
He declined to com m ent on what was

Bylsma said the board’s decisions are
internal, but conversely m entioned that
the clinic has received “ many, many let
ters.” He declined to com m ent on the
origin or nature o f the letters.
Bylsma also said the board is only en
couraging T aylor to relinquish an adm in
istration role she already w anted to give
up.
“She has said th a t's not her gift,” he
said. “She has said sh e’s w anted to give
up her role as adm inistrator before we
started the board.”

"W e’re in the process o f discussing
w hat her role w ould be," Bylsm a said.
“W e've offered her substantial severance,
w e're com m itted to being fair.”
T aylor’s attorney N ick Fish said there
w as never a question o f w hether sh e’ll
continue to service as a nurse practitioner
at the clinic.
M eanwhile.Taylorsits in limbo, at home.
She said sh e’s aw aiting a decision, and is
trying to m aintain her sanity by keeping
physically and spiritually fit.
“ I’m ready to go back,” she said, "and
if necessary ge, arrested."
