A new challenge arrived when news of the relocation reached Meek neighbors and the C oncordia Neighborhood A ssociation that represents them. C oncordia had three issues: Concerns that teenagers from else where would come through their neighborhood “with their cars, drugs and booze,” as one person put it; the likelihood Meek would never again be a local school; and a lack of public input. Despite this, the school district and Concordia reached an accom modation. “They were a very articulate, politically savvy and reasonable group of people,” Morrison said. “They tried really hard not to take out their anger with the district on our kids,” M cSw iggen added. Concordia Chair Nancy Hendricks asked hard questions and pushed for conditions. Today, Morrison said, she is sometimes asked if the Meek build ing is being used, so small is the neighborhood impact. Student Michael Armstrong said that the Project Citizen class was “more powerful because it was a real experience.” McSwiggen said her students found that they could go up and ask serious questions of important people. 4733 NE Thom pson Portland, Or. 97213 I . ______ $ 1 3 5 0 0 _______ I CALL FOR APPOINTMENT: (503) 281-3949 a n a lo g F M s t e r e o s ig n a l I Teresa Davis Family Service Counselor (503)281-1800 Dave Hinton General Manager www.rosshollywoodfuncralehapel.net
