Johnson was the founder, chairman and CEO of Johnson Publishing Company Inc., the world's largest black-owned publishing house, whose products include Ebony and Jet magazines. Revered for his leadership and charity, Mr. Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He overcame racial stereotypes and promoted self-respect in the African American community.
