Gulf Coast Misery
Aug. 31 - Two leevies broke and sent water coursing into the streets of
the Big Easy a full day after New Orleans appeared to have escaped the
widespread destruction from Hurricane Katrina. An estimated 80 percent
o f the city was under water, up to 20 feet in some places. Rescue boats
were bypassing the dead as hundreds, if not thousands of people were
stuck on roofs and in attics.
