Curious artists around Portland
recently spent time among local
firehouses, participating in and
observing the daily grind of being
a firefighter. What resulted is a large
collection of artwork to be featured
in “ In tersectio n s: A rtists and
F ire fig h te rs” at the In terstate
Firehouse Cultural Center running
Thursday, Sept. 8 through Oct. 27.
The show features the work of
Jason Greene, Mary Josephson,
Cynthia Lahti and Henk Pander in
collaboration with the Regional Arts
and Culture Council and Portland
Fire and Rescue.
Observations and impressions
were recorded with photographs,
sketches, diary entries and a wealth
M u lti-in stru m e n ta list and
songwriter Jake Armerding will con­
jure up a contemporary bluegrass
performance on Sept. 18a,8p.m .at
Mississippi Studios.
Armerding has won both re­
gional and national acclaim for his
smart, urbane blend of traditional
in stru m en tatio n w ith m elodic
songerait playing guitar, fiddle and
mandolin.
He was also recently nominated
for the Best Folk Artist award at the
2004 Boston Music Awards, which
celebrate the quality and diversity
of the rich Boston music scene.

then returned to their studios to
create unique artworks based on
their experiences.
Also on exhibit will be a collec­
tion of historic photographs from
the archives of the Portland Bureau
of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Ser­
vices. The photos document the
people, places, equipm ent, and
teams of horses that represented
the public personaof the firefighting
force o f a century ago.
The IFCC Gallery isopen 11 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays,
and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
