High School
Standards
Raised
The Portland School Board has
unanimously voted to raise the stan
dards for high school graduation,
starting with next year's freshman
class.
The more rigorous requirem ents
are designed to ensure students leave
school prepared for upwardly mobile
careers or for further education.
T he class o f 2009 will be required
to earn a total o f 24 credits to g radu
ate. T he new policy adds an addi
tional credit in both m ath and sci
ence (bringing the total required in
each subject area to three), and re
quires students to take eight elec
tives including three aligned w ith a
careerpathw ay area, culm inating in
a senior portfolio/project.
“ Research show s that the single
largest barrier to student achieve
m ent is low exp ectatio n s,” said
B obbie R e g an , c o -c h a ir o f th e
school board. “W e can and m ust
expect m ore from our students, and
w e will offer them the challenge and
support they need to succeed.”
T he class o f 2011 (today’s sixth
grade students) will be required to
com plete 25 credits to graduate, in
cluding tw o years studying a w orld
language and one elective credit in
the applied or fine arts.
