Mexico’s Fox asks Black Leaders for Support
(A P) - M exico P resident V icente Fox
is asking U.S. black leaders to support a
m igration accord as part o f efforts to
ease tensions over com m ents he m ade
m ore than a w eek ago that were branded
racist.
Fox angered the U.S. governm ent and
black A m ericans on M ay 13 w hen he
said that M exican im m igrants take jobs
“not even” blacks w ant in the United
States.
He defended his com m itm ent to m i­
norities and hum an rights on Sunday
during an interview w ith civil rights ac­
tivist Jesse Jackson on a U.S. radio pro­
gram , in his first public response to his
controversial com m ent.
“I very m uch regret the m isinterpreta­
tion," said Fox, touting laws created un­
der his adm inistration that outlaw dis­
crim ination and protect m inorities.
M any M exicans were at first puzzled by
the outcry over Fox’s com m ent, saying the
president was justified in his reaction to
new U.S. immigration policies that include
extending walls along the borderand crack­
ing down on illegal migrants.
