NASA Engineer Drives Exploration

Dallias Pearson has spent his
career launching big vessels, first
in the U.S. Navy and then in the U.S.
space program.
Pearson is a technical assistant
in the Automated Systems and
Automated Rendezvous and Dock­
ing Division of the Engineering
Directorate at NASA’s Marshall
Space Flight Center in Huntsville,
Ala. He is gearing up to play a key
role in one of NA SA ’s most excit­
ing ventures, further exploration of
our solar system. Pearson’s office
is responsible for ensuring space
transportation systems’ technol­
ogy is properly designed, devel­
oped and flight-ready.

Pearson is responsible for ve­
hicle avionics system analysis and
software power systems for such
NASA spacecraft as the Demon­
stration of Autonomous Rendez­
vous Technology. DART is a flight
demonstrator providing a key step
in establishing automated human-
free re n d e z v o u s c a p a b ilitie s
through the use of onboard com ­
puters and sensors.
His projects also include the
Orbital Express, scheduled for flight
during 2(X)6 and ground-level re­
search to support development of
the Crew Exploration Vehicle, the
next generation of space vehicles

ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE VICE PROVOST
Institutional Equity and Diversity
This position assists the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity in providing
leadership, guidance and direction for equity and diversity matters concerning faculty,
students and staff of the U0 community. This Assistant Vice Provost will provide high-
level professional support for a diverse array of projects including coordination of the
Oregon Emerging Scholars Program and the Undergraduate Support Program.
Responsibilities include assessment, composition and planning of written reports,
correspondence and oral communications; presentation of workshops, and related
events at the discretion of the Vice Provost; and representing the University of Oregon
and the Vice Provost at on and off campus events. This position serves as a resource
to the campus and surrounding communities with a primary emphasis on recruitment
and enrollment matters concerning Latino/Hispanic communities and other non-
traditional populations. Researching, writing, submitting and managing grants are regular
responsibilities of this position. Doctorate or first professional degree is preferred, a
Masters degree is required. Substantial experience working with education initiatives,
including partnerships with higher education institutions that include advocacy for
diversity and equity is preferred. Experience in creating and conducting equity workshops
is required. Experience in working with Latino/Hispanic and other underrepresented

lege Skill Center and Trades and
Industry departments hosted the
North and Northeast Jobs and Ca­
reer Summit.
Among the guests at the May 9
event were Sen. President Peter
Courtney, Sen. Pro Tern President
Margaret Carter and City Commis­
sioner and former PCC board mem­
ber Dan Saltzman.
The summit also included com­
munity ministerial leaders, criminal
justice representatives and local
community service-providers con­
nected with Cascade Campus pro­
grams.

facing unemployed and underem ­
ployed individuals in the north and
northeast area of Portland. They
worked on ways to develop strate­
gies to involve the community in
breaking down barriers to educa­
tion, training and career pathways,”
said Randy Blakely, director o f the
PCC Skill Center.
“Sen. Courtney particularly con­
centrated his presentation on his
commitment to seeing that K-12
and community colleges receive
necessary funding for education
and w o rk fo rce d e v e lo p m e n t,”
