Racial Discrimination Found in New Orleans Bars
Study reveals
unbalanced
patron treatment
(A P) - If y o u ’re black and belly
up to a bar on B ourbon Street, be
forewarned: You run a 50-50chance
o f either being charged m ore or
being forced to order a m inim um
num ber o f drinks.
T hose are the findings o f a study
done for the city in the w ake o f the
death o f a black college student
w ho died in a scuffle with w hite
bouncers outside a bar on the fa
m ous French Q uarter thoroughfare
in N ew O rleans.
T he study, conducted by the
Greater New Orleans Fair Housing
Action Center, paired black and white
men o f similar body type, dress and
manner, and sent them intobars within
minutes o f each other.
O f the 28 bars visited, 40 percent
charged the black custom ers more
for drinks. A white man, forexam ple,
bought a Long Island iced tea for
$7.50, while the black man was
charged $9, according to James Perry,
executive director o f the private.
nonprofit housing center.
Ten percent o f the bars informed
the blacks — but not the w hites —
that there was adrink m inimum, and
7 percent told their black custom ers
that they would have to meet a dress
code.
The report recom m ended the city
take several steps, including inves
tigating discrim ination at bars and
enforcing civil rights laws through
litigation.

A scuffle ensued and Jones, 25,
died after one bouncer held him in
a headlock for 12 m inutes, w hile
