Rose Festival showcases outstanding young women

mentorship program.
Each court member represents her
school throughout the months of May
and June at many community events,
including meetings with business lead­
ers, visits to hospitals and senior
living centers.
This year, the entertaining Corona-
tion event will be held on Thursday,
June 2 at 8:30 p.m. at the Arlene
Schnitzer Concert Hall. The event
can also be watched live, beginning
with a preview show at 8 p.m., on
WB cable channel 3 or over-the-air
channels 4 and 32.
Tickets in advance are $12 gen­
eral, $6 students. To purchase tick­

Every year the Portland Rose Fes­
tival Association chooses local nomi­
nees for Portland Rose Festival Queen
based on leadership and scholastic
achievement, school activities, civic
involvem ent, volunteer projects,
communication skills and overall im­
pressions.
Out of 14 outstanding women se­
lec ted from P o rtla n d -a re a high
sch o o ls, one is crow ned at the
Queen’s Coronation.
The mission of the Rose Festival
Court is to showcase outstanding
Portland area young women while
offering opportunities for further
education and networking; to take
the Rose Festival out into the com ­
munity; and to offer thanks to festival
sponsors and contributors.
Each am bassador is awarded a
$3,500 scholarship courtesy of The
Randall Group and Pacific Power. In
addition. Pacific Power female ex-

Hard-liner Chosen As Pope
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Ger-
many, the Catholic Church’s lead­
ing hard-liner, was elected the
new pope Tuesday evening in the
first conclave of the new millen­
nium. He chose the name Pope
Benedict XVI and called himself
“a simple, humble worker.” Ratzinger is
the first German pope since the 11 th

Moussaoui Offers Plea
Seventeen Afghan men released from the
U.S. detention center for terror suspects
in Guantanamo Bay were turned over to
Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person in
the U.S. charged in connection with the

local authorities in Kabul on Tuesday with
a warning not to discuss mistreatment at
the facility. Chief Justice Fazl Hadi
Shinwari urged the men not to complain
of bad treatment, warning it could jeopar­
dize the chances for more releases.
